La Junta, Colorado - November 1971 |
Seen from the vestibule of Amtrak #4 on the way to my Grandparents 50th wedding anniversary in Wisconsin. The train was still all Santa Fe six months into the Amtrak era. The only sign onboard of the new regime was a crude xeroxed single sheet timetable with the Amtrak logo on it. Colorado used to be a large producer of sugar beets, and you can see loads in both hoppers, and gondolas. Even though the Colorado plains are one of the best places to grow sugar beets in the world, the industry has declined steadily since the 1960s.
