Amboy Crater is a Mojave Desert landmark that has caught the attention of generations of travelers on both Santa Fe passenger trains and Route 66. In the 1920's the volcanic cone played a role in a delicious prank. Old tires were set alight by a few Barstow youths, and some panic ensued before the ruse was discovered.
