The Only Silver Lining With Montana's Fire Season - Helena Forest Service Air Tanker Base

You know things are getting hot in Montana when you start seeing the large profile of a DC-10 taking off out of Helena Airport. The USFS Air Tanker Base is the largest in the area and is capable of handling the DC-10s as well as smaller fire fighting aircraft. Website: https://helenaairport.com/usfs-tanker-base/





On my second trip to the airport yesterday was able to take these from the south side of the airport, thru a chain link fence of course.  Access to the base from the north side is pretty iffy.

    Are you involved in wildland fire fighting personally? Just curious, it would be neat to find others who are and a railroad enthusiast.

    No, can only admire their efforts from a far. We had several small fires very close to Helena yesterday.
