Fifty years ago Friday the remains of Robert F. Kennedy were carried on a special Penn Central passenger train between New York City, and Washington D.C. for Kennedy's burial at Arlington National Cemetery. The charter reportedly cost the Kennedy Family $15,000. I am sure that figure would be at least ten times that today.
The train was 21 cars long and was powered by GG1's 4901 and 4903, both recently repainted and lettered by an only four month old Penn Central. The train was preceded by a pilot train of three cars pulled by a single GG1.
