If you didn't experience the Counter Culture of the 1960s directly, Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test is a must read. No one could write better prose relative to the times than Tom Wolfe. I got to see him speak in person in 1976 at the University of New Mexico. He was promoting The Painted Word, but spent the the first half hour cleverly riffing on Kesey and the Pranksters much to the delight of the audience.
