Union Pacific's East L.A. Getaway

GM PD4101 buses line up with their baggage doors facing the train at East Los Angeles Depot. Buses are bound for Glendale, San Pedro and Anaheim.

From a 1954 Official Guide which must be close to the date of the top photo. The L.A.  Harbor destination is intriguing as it means some passengers must have been connecting to an exotic destination via passenger liner, maybe Matson's Lurline to Honolulu?

Now that's intermodal. Disneyland Hotel Monorail Station opened in 1961.

Two more Monorail photos just for grins.

The prewar version. Bus in foreground is headed for Glendale. Again the baggage is loaded in the rear. This looks to be on the west side of the station.

Is that a drumhead on the back of the bus? If so, how cool is that?
A scene from The Postman Always Rings Twice  from 1946, which puts these scenes between the set of photos above.
Buses are on the east side of the depot now and they predate the PD4101s.
A big handsome Mountain brings a WB into the depot.
Lana Turner is helped off the train.
Lana looks a bit worried, but check out those leaf-springs.

Just like SP's Glendale Station served as a convenient bypass of L.A.U.P.T. for those passengers destined for the L.A. Basin's suburbs, so did UP's East Los Angeles Station offer the same convenience. Not only, that but UP passengers bound for say Long Beach would not have to patronize SP subsidiary Pacific Electric's interurban trains, which also would have entailed a transfer to Sixth and Main. The one question I have is whether checked baggage was transferred to the buses at E. Los Angeles. One would think so, as the convenience would be partially negated if one had to male a trip into LA to get ones bags.

Someone has restored one of the GM PD4101 buses used in the L.A. service. Photo here.
