C&NW Scenes in Anatomy of a Murder

Title card by Saul Bass
Arthur O'Connell (Parnell McCarthy) and James Stewart (Paul Biegler) wait for murder suspect Ben Gazarra (Lt. Manion.) to return by train from Detroit where he was examined by an Army psychiatrist. The scene was shot in the C&NW Ishpeming, Michigan depot.

Lt. Manion arrives.

The three discuss Lt. Manion's diagnosis of  a dissociative disorder.

It's very much in keeping with the Paul Biegler character that Stewart would be eating peanuts. Note the System Map and  the publicity photo and what looks like a set of four photos of local scenery.

The production utilized an actual C&NW train set, and is seen arriving at Ishpeming, Michigan.

E8 5030B would later get HEP installed and work in RTA's Chicago suburban service.

The two head end cars are Baggage-RPO  8202 or 8203, and Baggage Express 8693 or 8694.

The car would be sold to National Railways of Mexico and renamed Lago Baikal of all things.
Back to the movie, some confusion ensues when the Arthur O'Connell character mistakes a disembarking passenger for the Army Psychiatrist played by Orson Bean.
Orson Bean is the last surviving major cast member of the film and is 89 years old. Note the shadow cast by the movie lights.
Bringing up the rear is Coach 847.

I wish to gratefully acknowledge information provided by Frank Carlson of the C&NW Historical Society.
