One Hundred years ago today the Germans loosed a massive artillery bombardment on the French city of Verdun, and its surrounding forts. A lot of the heavy artillery pieces were railway guns.

Alistair Horne's The Price of Glory, is simply the best military history I have ever read. I really need to dig it out and read it again.
