In Praise of a Closed Bridge - Bridge Pedal Part 1

Providence Bridge Pedal Event - Top Deck of the Fremont Bridge - August 1997

Albina Diesel from the Fremont Bridge - August 1997

Now a Portland tradition, the Providence Bridge Pedal (link) was in its second year in 1997.  Portland's Willamette River bridges are closed in rotation as the event proceeds. I took advantage of the event to take some photos of Union Pacific's Albina Yard from the top deck of the Fremont Bridge, I-405. As you can see its merger mania time, as UP is digesting its new fleet. Just a couple of years earlier, it was not uncommon to observe a sea of Zito Yellow, as C&NW SD50s and SD60s were very common in Portland.
