Wreck of the 3769 - Gallup, New Mexico - December 18, 1943

Santa Fe Northern 3769 heading a WB mail train hit a switch engine in the fog. There were two fatalities.

Thanks to Altamont Press contributor R. Welch for information on this wreck. He thinks that these photos were taken by the late Jackson Thode.

  1. The date was December 18, 1943 at Gallup, NM. A Westbound mail train entering the terminal, during intense fog, hit a switch engine at the East end of station track. The mail train had over ran a red block! I believe these pix's were taken by the late Jack Thode.

  2. How do you "over ran" a red block when you enter a yard? If you are entering a yard, then you are on Other Than Main Track or Controlled Siding. Block system limits end when leaving Main or Controlled Sidings. There is no requirement fro stopping at a red signal when leaving a Main Track. What that all means is...operate at Restricted Speed. I would guess the mail train was running hot leaving the main track or got confused thinking they were still on the main track, and didn't realize they were beyond block signal limits.
