I am a person who sometimes craves the idea of living in physical isolation from the rest of the world. These residents of Langeness and Oland, islands in the North Sea in Germany, near the Danish border, certainly are isolated. The upside? They have their own 900mm narrow gauge railroad, that both connects them to the outside world, and helps maintain that isolation by helping to maintain the barriers against the North Sea. The little cars were once propelled by sail, as can be seen towards the end of this excellent Eisenbahn Romantik video.
