The UP was a railroad that was used to having its way with the design of mammoth state of the art steam locomotives to conquer all those empty miles. Chief Mechanical Officer D.S. Neuhart tried to wrest the same sort of custom design from diesel manufacturers more interested in standardization. Standardization eventually won out, and the fourth unit in the above consist bears witness to that, but the show that his double-diesels put on for two decades, was spectacular.
