I have spent more than a few hours sitting on the stone ledges at the SP Salem depot. Traffic on this part of the Brooklyn Subdivision was noticeably lighter than at Albany. An entire afternoon might yield just one or two freights. Across town at a hospital on the east side of Salem, my new cousin, the only female grandchild of my maternal grandmother, has been born. So a month in 1970 serves as a temporal benchmark
