If you ever want a good railroad history read, I heartily recommend Richard C. Overton's Gulf to Rockies. Overton set the mark for railroad historiography with his earlier 1965 book Burlington Route. Until that point U.S. railroad histories tended to be corporate wash jobs. Burlington Route is primarily a financial and construction history, but in Gulf to Rockies, Overton gets into some seriously good narrative history, weaving more biography and geography into the book.
