Tanker Golden Gate - Empty and Loaded

Tanker Golden Gate - Empty

Tanker Golden Gate - Loaded

With closed freight cars, one has to look at the truck springs to figure out if the car is loaded or empty. With ships, it is much more apparent. Pictured above is Keystone Shipping tanker Golden Gate, seen at San Pedro, California in 1986. This ship was used to ferry petroleum products between refineries in the Bay Area and ones in Southern California. The ship was implicated in a tragedy off Point Reyes on May 26, 1986, when it collided with the fishing boat Jack Jr. with three hands aboard. All on the fishing vessel were lost, and the Golden Gate crew was not aware of the accident at the time it occurred. The ship was scrapped in 2001.
