Chronically short of both cash, and motive power, Southern Pacific, in the 1990's, resorted to purchasing rebuilt locomotives from Morrison-Knudsen. There was no shortage of EMD platforms for this rebuilding program, as other more prosperous lines were casting off their second generation 645 engined power for newer units. This unit is former Missouri Pacific SD40 708, which was delivered without dynamic brakes, and once sported a Screaming Eagle on its flanks.
