Glass insulators are another item on the railroad landscape that is vanishing. In 2007, I took a trip from Portland to the Twin Cities on the Empire Builder. Mile after mile of right of way in Montana and North Dakota was littered with trackside piles of telegraph poles, cut in half, with most of the insulators intact. The signal wires, along with other utilities, are now underground. Glass Insulators remain a popular item for collectors, and there are numerous websites about them. Here is a link on the anatomy of an insulator, and a link on Hemingray, probably the largest manufacturer of insulators.
