Musical Interlude - Fred Neil - Dolphins

Thanks goes to the late B. Mitchell Reed of the old KMET in Los Angeles, for playing this tune regularly.

Musical Interlude - Fred Neil - Other Side of This Life

One of the coolest most gone dudes in the history of American popular music;  the late Fred Neil from Coconut Grove, Florida. This song was a staple of Jefferson Airplane live performances, and the version on Bless Its Pointed Little Head is a cosmic gem. The song has an unfortunate legacy, as it was the song being performed at Altamont when the Angels punched Marty Balin in the face. Link to Youtube video, warning NSFW due to language and nudity. They shoulda listened to Spencer Dryden who warned about a bad vibe, and I didn't see any pool tables.

Picasa 3.9 Pencil Sketch Effect, all three photos.

You're minding your own business, using a favorite piece of cloud based software, when a dialog box pops up...."A new version is available, do you want to update?"  Not wanting to be a Luddite, you roll the dice and say yes, fearing the worst, you start up the new version, and yes --  a few things have obviously changed. Some buttons have moved, but you make a quick check, and all of the functionalities you need are all still there. Then you decide to check out some of the new features. Hmmmm?

Such was the case with my recent upgrade to Picasa 3.9 .  Temporary alarm was replaced with curiosity as I began to use the two new editing tabs that Google has borrowed from Picnik.  Now this is bit curious as Google is closing Picnik effective April 19,  and moving it to Google+, but it does give Picasa a little more sex appeal, as it was beginning to lag way behind such editors as BeFunky and smartphone editors.

I am still getting familiar with the new features, but the photos above, and below,  from my Dinoglow site,  include use of the Pencil Sketch, Ortonish, and HDR, Neon and Comic Book features.

Compania Minera De Cananea S.A.

Imagine driving east on I-10 on Beaumont Hill when you see a locomotive dead ahead. This former SP Alco S-6 is headed to a Mexican mining company, but was detained at the truck scales,  possibly a problem with the axle loading.

Eight PCC Cars on Market St.

San Francisco Municipal Railway, Market St. San Francisco, California
"Count'em"  as David P. Morgan used to say.  If space aliens ever descend to Earth with the intent of putting us humans out of our misery,  I would protest saying; "Hey look, we can't be all bad... we created the PCC car!"

Santa Fe Snoot at the Viaduct - 8th Street Vancouver, Wa.

Former ATSF SD40-2  BNSF 6864
While I'm working on part 3 of the Santa Fe Tehachapi feature, here is a photo from another time and place. The row of pines along the viaduct is now gone.  Many in Vancouver condsider this concrete structure to be an eyesore. Go figure.

Musical Interlude - Copperhead - John Cipollina

My other candidate for most neglected early Seventies Bay Area record, is Copperhead. A John Cipollina side project. I bought this record as a corner cut, for 1$ at a grocery store in 1973.

Musical Interlude - Bodacious D.F. - Marty Balin

Marty Balin formed Bodacious D.F. after his departure from the Airplane in 1971, and they put out this one LP in 1973. Another candidate for most neglected rock record of the period, it features outstanding musicianship, with a little bit of an East Bay R&B feel.

I think that most railfans have some interest in roadside attractions, although not all of us stop and take photographs because we might miss that train.
