Santa Fe Wreck - Planada, California - June 23, 1953

Santa Fe Alco PA 74L

The two aerial photos were taken by Gainsborough Studio in Merced.  Information from Craig Tambo via Altamont Press:

" I'm pretty sure [this wreck] is the sideswipe collision between Train 6 and freight symbol NCX at Planada on June 23, 1953. The details in the photos on pages 210-212 of the book "Valley Divison Vignettes" closely match the aerial photos you posted. "

Thanks Craig. Planada is just a few miles east of Merced.

  1. yes, that is the Planada train wreck ... Reiman Mills storage tanks in the upper left corner, top, palm trees were centered on Broadway .... I remember going to see the damage as a young boy of 6 ... just above Reiman Mills is the train station ...
