"Frogged" by the AVBAT

Just an ordinary January day in SoCal in 1982, and I get a call from Bruce Veary (a.k.a. The Tehachapi Kid, for all of you EW readers,) the Avondale Bay Area Trailers, has been heading west from New Orleans with experimental Daylight schemed SD45R, 7399 on the point! It's due in West Colton today, and so we plan a rendezvous in Colton.  We wait, and wait, and horror of horrors, a GE "Shrimp Boat" had been added to the point at either Yuma, or Indio. Of course it was added for the prosaic reason of getting the train over Beaumont Hill. My companion was inconsolable, but I thought it was kind of funny, and I was just glad to see the unit.
