Taylor Yard's Little Cousin - City of Industry Yard

Southern Pacific's Taylor Yard in Los Angeles was rather notorious as being an operational bottleneck. It would have been more so, if the SP had not upgraded the old Puente yard into a mini-hump in the 60's. City of Industry took over the chore of handling local traffic from the extensive Orange County and South-Central LA basin branchline network. Three transfers a day were operated between Taylor and COI. These were called the Walnut Turn, the Marne Turn, and the Industry Turn. COI dispatched an Anaheim Hauler, a Buena Park Hauler, plus a job to Los Nietos and other old PE destinations. These trains utilized UP trackage rights between Puente Jct, and Bartolo and were powered mostly by GP9s with SW1500s and C415s as well. Two of the later are seen above trimming the "A" Yard where mainline setouts and pickups were made. The bottom photo shows auto parts boxcars for the Ford plant in South Gate.

  1. CoI was one of the best yards on the LA Division to work. This was very evident in that the seniority was pretty high on all jobs there.
