On the night of November 19, 1929 Folsom Prison parolee Buffalo Tom Vernon derailed Southern Pacific train No.59 The Pacific Coast Limited with the intention of robbing the passengers of their valuables. Using tools stolen from a section shed he pried out enough spikes on a curve without severing the signal bond wires. The engineer was severely scaled but there were no other casualties. Tom made his way through the upright passenger cars and robbed the occupants at gunpoint. He only took their cash and let them keep their jewelry. Tom escaped on foot over the hill to downtown Saugus and caught a ride into L.A.
The bandit was soon apprehended in Oklahoma.
