| The Right of Way by Beaumont Fairbank, Puck Magazine 1910 |
Not too difficult to see the present in the past in this wonderful illustration by railroad artist Beaumont Fairbank (more here.) If the Private Monopoly Special can be construed as one of today's domestic stack trains or a grain shuttle running point to point on a fixed timetable, then the Legitimate Business train on the right is certainly "loose car" railroading. The Plain People Local?..... well that's Amtrak of course, stuck in the siding again for a non-clearing freight train.
