I found this photo on the very cool blog linked in the caption. Date is 1952. Note the Classics Illustrated issues on the upper left of the rack. To this day I can proudly say that most of my reading of English lit comes from these comic book versions. Like I was ever going to read Tom Brown's School Days, or the Count of Monte Cristo any other way?
