"Eugene" GP-9s

SP X3640 E. The Northsider at Corvallis Jct., Oregon 1972

SP X3537 E. Train 706 readies to depart Eugene Yard, 1972

Technically assigned to Roseville, there was a group of GP-9s which were, for all intents and purposes, Eugene power. 3640, 3624, and 3537 pictured above were seen by this author every summer on the Oregon Div. from 1968 to 1973. These GPs were used interchangeably on the local freights with SD9s, and were also used to bracket F-units on the Toldeo train starting in 1970 to facilitate switching at Toledo.

From my notebook July 25,  1972

It was unusual for the Northsider to have so many GP-9s in one consist, and I never saw a pure set of Geeps on the train. Note that the "Eugene" GP-9s tended to be in the high 3500s and low 3600s. This train is pictured below.

10 years later and more than a thousand miles away from Corvallis Jct., 3640 is now
an LA unit, seen at Pomona, CA. 1982
