Extinct Horseshoe Curves - UP Crestline Nevada

Tucked up fast by the Utah border was a lonely but stunning piece of LA&SL engineering that lasted until 1981.

A UP eastbound pig negotiates the reverse curves at Crestline, Nevada,  heading for the Utah border. This is the northern part of the alignment that was eliminated by the line change. Note the Japanese mini-truck beds. This photo was taken in December of 1980, and the new line was already being graded at this date.

A westbound Van train slips around the Crestline, Nevada horseshoe, still battling upgrade here.  One more tight set of reverse curves follow, as can be seen in the photo below, of a Kaiser Sunnyside coal train. One can easily see why UP wanted to eliminate this alignment.
