One of the thrills of watching trains in San Bernardino, California, when the ATSF still had the shops open, was listening to the howl of a diesel locomotive roaring away at Run8 during a load test. Sometimes the noise could be a little disconcerting, especially during a fierce Santa Ana Wind, when the roar would get modulated in the swirling dry air.
