ATTENTION Citizens of Osceola, Iowa - DEADLY COAL TRAIN

EB Powder River Coal Loads on the old CB&Q main at Osceola Iowa, June 1992

I waited at the Amtrak depot in Osceola, Iowa for the better part of a morning before I finally got a westbound freight to photograph. The old CB&Q through Iowa was not as busy as I had hoped. Please notice the birds and insects falling out of the sky. Women are having miscarriages, and little boys are pulling the wings of off flies, all because of the passage of this coal train.

A hot contest over PNW coal terminals is going on in Bellingham, Wa.  It it is a bit ironic to me, because I remember when downtown Bellingham had both a pulp mill, and a very fragrant rendering plant as recently as 1978 . Bellingham was strictly blue collar then except maybe for Western Washington State, which by the way must have one of the most stunning scenic views from a campus.

  2. Deadly or not - a very nice shot of a clean white face. I spent quite a few summer evenings around the Osceola depot one year (quite a few back now). At the time I didn't consider these white faces particularly charming, but the years have changed that. One evening the freshly painted "Barf Bonnet" came through on a coal drag. Even that has started to look better with the passage of a few years.

    Good stuff as always.
